UFC President Dana White has hinted a possible interim title return for the former light heavyweight ruler Jon Jones.
“Bones” has been inactive in the past two years, as he decided to vacate his 93 kg division belt and to chase the gold in the heavyweight category. Unfortunately for him, thing have been really slow, as he has been in war with Dana White and the UFC due to his financial demands.
It seems though, we might not have to wait much more for Jones to be back. The current heavyweight king Francis Ngannou underwent a surgery today and he won’t return in the next 8-9 months which means he’ll also have to vacate the belt.
Even if he reaches a deal with UFC and keeps the gold, Jones will be battling for the interim championships.
“I haven’t thought about it at all, but yeah, it sounds like something we would do,” White told ESPN’s Brett Okamoto when asked about the possibility of Jones fighting for the interim heavyweight belt.
“Not until we know what Francis is gonna do or what’s gonna happen, but if that’s the case, if he ends up sitting out for a year, Jon could come right in and fight for a title.”
