A rematch between the reigning UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman and Leon Edwards is in the works for the upcoming UFC 278 event which is scheduled to take place on August 20th in what is anticipated to be Salt Lake City, Utah. The location of the event has yet to be officially announced.
ESPN’S Ariel Helwani reported the news. According to him, as of this moment there’s no more info due to the fact Usman is still recovering from the surgery on his hand.
Yesterday ESPN’s Brett Okamoto provided an update, stating that progress has gone slower than hoped for the reigning champion.
“Spoke to [Usman’s manager] Ali Abdelaziz about Kamaru Usman’s hand,” Okamoto tweeted. “He said as of now Kamaru has not been medically cleared and there is no timeframe on his return. Kamaru only started slowly testing the hand this month.”
Usman hasn’t fought since November 2021 when he defeated Colby Covington. Edwards was last seen inside the Octagon in June 2021 when he beat Nate Diaz.
