Alexander Povetkin (35-2) is the new WBA International heavyweight champion following his victory over Hughie Fury (23-3).
The pair met yesterday in the co-main event of the Lomachenko-Campbell fight in London, as the Russian got the W via UD (117-111, 117-111 and 117-111). The 39-year-old vet was absent from the big stage for almost a year, but the 24-year-old Fury didn’t pose a threat for Povetkin.
The Brit made his Matchroom Boxing debut. He preferred to stand back and use his reach and height advantage, but his jab wasn’t enough to keep the former world champion away, as Alexander was gunning with his strong hooks. The Russian fighter was the aggressor throughout the whole fight, ducking and diving under Fury’s shots that were being telegraphed most of the time.
Hughie wasn’t able to dictate the tempo of the fight, barely throwing more than two shots. Povetkin, on the other hands, was marching forward and doing a nice job on the inside, punching Fury in the body and swinging for the left KO hook.
The Brit got a cut on his left eye in the late rounds of the fight, showing his solid chin, but nothing more.
