WBO super middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders promised to follow in the footsteps of Floyd Mayweather and dethrone the current P4P best fighter, Saul Alvarez.
Saunders, 31, is set to face the Mexican superstar on May 8 in the US, with the exact location of the fight yet to be announced. The British fighter will be fighting for the first time since April 2020 when he defeated his fellow countryman Martin Murray.
Even though Alvarez is the strong favorite to unify the super middleweight division, “The Superb” believes he can do what only Floyd Mayweather was able to do up to this point – and that is to beat Canelo.
“Canelo, I’m ready to rock and roll,” said Saunders. “You have to dare to be great. You aren’t going to be great if you don’t beat the greats. “I believe I am the only one with the footwork, know-how, skillset, mindset, and brain to unlock that door in Canelo.
“He’s the main man in the sport and the face of boxing. You have to give him respect. He hasn’t ducked anyone. “He’s beaten good names, but nobody is unbeatable, and I believe I have got the tools to beat him if I use them correctly and if the gamelan comes off that I think works.
“I am looking at the golden ticket to cement my legacy, and that’s how you have to go in there to beat him”.
Canelo is fresh off a third-round stoppage against Turkey’s Avni Yildirim. The Mexican wasted no time to put his WBC super-middleweight mandatory, beating him like a drum for 9 minutes before the Turk’s corner threw the towel in.
