Gordon Ryan vs Pat Downey (Submission Only Match)

Gordon Ryan and Pat Downey’s matches at the BJJ Fanatics Invitational have concluded, and although there were a few surprises, the submission grappler won the submission grappling match, and the wrestler won the wrestling match.

As the submission grappling match kicked off, the competitors spent a few minutes on their feet fighting for grips. Downey managed to get Ryan to his knees, but the athletes quickly sprung back to their feet, where they stayed for a few more minutes. Although there were a few attempts at arm drags and foot sweeps, it was still some time before Downey was able to force Ryan to his knees again. There was a quick scramble, but the grapplers ultimately returned to their feet.

Downey once again got Ryan to the ground, but this time, Ryan opted to stay down and play guard. Downey struggled to pass, and Ryan began to work for a leg entanglement before getting up to try to take Downey’s back. After a quick detour out of bounds, the competitors were reset, and Ryan managed to secure a triangle from the back. Although he didn’t have a submission locked in, Downey tapped out multiple times, grabbing his shoulder and arm as if in pain. Ryan was declared the winner of the match by submission. The athletes’ second match was a quick one, with Downey using his skills and knowledge of the wrestling rule set to dominate the ADCC double champ.
