Canelo Alvarez has not fought more than twice in a calendar year since 2011, when he defeated Matthew Hatton, Ryan Rhodes, Alfonso Gomez, and Kermit Cintron. Now, he tells Dan Rafael that he’d like to change that; in addition to his scheduled February 27th mandatory defense against Avni Yildirim and pending May 8th unification bout with Billy Joe Saunders, the Mexican superstar claims he wants to see action in September and December.
Alvarez (54-1-2, 36 KO) has an obvious target in IBF champion Caleb Plant, who was on the shortlist to meet Alvarez on December 19th before Callum Smith got the call. Former WBC champ David Benavidez has been pushing hard for a crack at “Sweethands,” but it seems exponentially more likely that Plant sits on the shelf until September instead of risking a career-high payday against a massive-risk, low-reward threat like “El Bandera Roja.”
That’s three opponents accounted for; any preferences on the fourth? Should Gennadiy Golovkin vs Jaime Munguia make it off the negotiating table, a fight between Canelo and the winner could potentially make bank at the box office, especially if the pandemic subsides enough to get full attendance.
