Following in the footsteps of Gervonta Davis vs Leo Santa Cruz this past Halloween, Canelo Alvarez’s December 19th return against Callum Smith will take place at San Antonio, Texas’ Alamodome.
“I am thrilled to be back at the Alamodome and very thankful to be fighting in front of my fans on December 19,” said Canelo. “I have great memories of my previous bouts in Texas, and I expect this to be a special fight to close out the year.”
Despite record COVID cases, Texas Governor Greg Abbott has refused to implement any stricter lockdown procedures, leaving organizers free to once again permit a live audience. More than 9,000 were reportedly in attendance for the aforementioned Halloween tussle, so you can almost certainly expect similar or greater numbers this time around.
Alvarez (53-1-2, 36 KO) last graced the Alamodome back in 2013, when he narrowly edged out Austin Trout to claim the WBA super welterweight title. Smith (27-0, 19 KO) will be making the third stateside appearance of his eight-year career; he stopped Abraham Hernandez in Carson six years ago, then smashed Hassan N’Dam at Madison Square Garden in June of last year.
