UFC President Dana White has confirmed what everybody already knew – UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski will be next in line for getting a title shot in the lightweight division.
The vacant belt will be on the line this upcoming Saturday night in Abu Dhabi when former titleholder Charles Oliveira faces Islam Makchachev in the main event of UFC 280.
Last week it was announced that Volkanovski will serve as a potential backup for the fight in case something goes wrong with the highly anticipated fight. The Aussie said that his weight efforts will be rewarded financially and that he’ll get the winner of the Oliveira – Makchachev fight.
UFC President, Dana White responded to Volkanovski’s sentiment yesterday by saying; “It makes sense.”
Originally, the expectation was for Beneil Dariush — who fights Mateusz Gamrot on UFC 280— to act as the potential replacement fighter.
