Dillon Danis, a brazilian jiu-jitsu champion, cornerman of Conor McGregor and Bellator fighter, received seven-month suspension at a Monday meeting of the Nevada Athletic Commission (NAC) for his role in the post-fight melee that spilled out of the cage following Khabib Nurmagomedov’s fourth-round submission victory over Conor McGregor at UFC 229. Danis was also fined $7,500. His suspension stretches until May 6, 2019.
In total, Danis is the fifth person to be punished for the UFC 229 post-fight melee. Nurmagomedov received a nine-month suspension and $500,000 fine, McGregor received a six-month suspension and $50,000 fine, and Nurmagomedov’s teammates Zubaira Tukhugov and Abubakar Nurmagomedov were both issued one-year suspensions and $25,000 fines. Khabib Nurmagomedov’s suspension is able to be shortened into a six-month suspension upon the UFC lightweight champion’s participation in an anti-bullying public service announcement commissioned by the NAC.
Danis, 25, was attacked cageside by Khabib Nurmagomedov immediately following the undefeated Dagestani’s win over McGregor. According to NAC officials, Danis’ suspension and fine were the result of an unsportsmanlike conduct charge, with commission representatives noting that Danis had to be physically restrained by security personnel on multiple occasions and used obscene gestures against Nurmagomedov and his team.
