A little more three years after they faced off for a fight that never happened, Dustin Poirier and Nate Diaz are circling another booking.
On Twitter, the UFC stars appeared to agree to a fight. Just when and where that might happen remains to be seen, but after Diaz jabbed Conor McGregor by showing him how it’s done against Poirier, his would-be opponent spoke up on Wednesday.
Diaz was referencing Poirier’s withdrawal from the first matchup, scheduled for UFC 230, due to a hip injury that needed surgery. Diaz later withdrew from the event, and the fighters went their separate ways, though they continued to take shots at each other online.
Diaz even proposed a meeting at middleweight. Poirier said he could beat the Stockton, Calif., native anywhere.
After besting Conor McGregor in their rematch at UFC 257, Poirier targeted Diaz as a possible next opponent. Instead, he went on to complete a trilogy with McGregor that ended in a second win after McGregor was ruled out via doctor’s stoppage with a broken leg.
UFC President Dana White named Poirier the likely next candidate for a title shot against lightweight champion Charles Oliveira, and Poirier expected he would vie for the title when he returned to the octagon. That said, a fight against Diaz, a proven pay-per-view draw, could provide another enticing diversion.
Poirier has explained that a third fight with box office star McGregor was the easy choice over a fight for the title left vacant by the retiring Khabib Nurmagomedov. He passed on a fight against Oliveira and watched the Brazilian capture the belt via second-round TKO.
Could Poirier take another detour? Either way, the UFC lightweight star appears to have options.
