Matchroom Boxing’s Eddie Hearn is a firm believer that the undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez will return to the ring in May 2023.
The Mexican superstar underwent a surgery on his left wrist which will keep him out of action until early April. Canelo injured his hand in his last outing against Gennady Golovkin this past September.
Even though Saul said he’ll probably return next September, Hearn believes that Canelo will take advantage of the Mexican holiday Cinco de Mayo. In recent years Canelo is following in the footsteps of Floyd Maywetaher who always fought around May 5 in the second stage of his career.
“Yeah, I spoke to him after the surgery,” Hearn said on the Boxing with Chris Mannix podcast. “I think he was very happy with how it went. He talked about being able to punch in two months, so I don’t see — certainly he hasn’t given me any indication and I think it’s too early to say — but I believe you’ll see him return in May.
“Because if he’s punching towards the end of December, there’s no problem being ready for a May fight. He’s already training, he’s already fit.”
“Could that extend to September?” Hearn continued. “Maybe. He’s had a big run of fights, but I think he’s very happy with how it went. Knowing Saul, I think he’ll be wanting to get back into the ring as soon as possible.”
