Ahead of the March 27 rematch between heavyweight contenders Alexander Povetkin and Dillian Whyte, the government of Gibraltar — where the fight will be held — have commissioned a special £2 coin to commemorate the event.
Povetkin (36-2-1, 25 KO) upset Whyte (27-2, 18 KO) last August, scoring a brutal fifth round knockout after coming off the canvas twice in the fourth round himself. The Russian will look to do it again, while Whyte obviously is trying to get back to where he was.
“It is a great honor for someone like me to go down in history as the first boxer, and first black man, to feature on sterling currency,” said Whyte. “I can’t believe that someone that comes from where I come from and has been through what I’ve been through can be honored in this way.
“There’s a lot of black people that have done much bigger things than me, so it’s a really special occasion for me and my family. This is why we should never give up on children that come from disadvantaged and troubled backgrounds. Kids that are difficult and misunderstood at school can always turn out to do big things in their lives.”
The Gibraltar card will also feature Ted Cheeseman (16-2-1, 9 KO) taking on JJ Metcalf (21-0, 13 KO) for the vacant British junior middleweight title and much more, and will stream live on DAZN
