The 2021 European Karate Championships will not be hosted in the city of Gothenburg, Sweden, as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.
The event is scheduled to take place between May 16 and 21 but it has been confirmed that local organizers have pulled out.
The European Karate Federation is currently looking for a replacement city that will host the 56th edition of the continental competition. The European Championships are important because they will serve as a qualification tournament for the debut of Karate at the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
This year’s event had to take place in Baku, Azerbaijan, but the coronavirus pandemic canceled the event, and WKF named the south Swedish city the host for next year’s competition.
