Chael Sonnen’s Submission Underground (SUG) returns on May 23 with an event featuring tag team jiu-jitsu, a women’s number one contender bout, a match-up between MMA and UFC veterans Carlos Condit and Jake Ellenberger, and SUG champion Mason Fowler defending his title against Kyle Chambers.
Here are the SUG 23 matches we know about so far.
Mason Fowler (champion) vs. Kyle Chambers: Fresh off an overtime submission win over Andy Varela at SUG 22, Fowler continues to dominate in the promotion, as he’ll look to maintain his undefeated SUG record when he takes on Kyle Chambers. A 10th Planet representative with an explosive guard and dangerous leg locks, Chambers earned the title shot on the strength of a heel hook win over Ben Egli at SUG 22.
Gillian Robertson vs. Raquel Canuto: Current UFC flyweight Gillian Robertson will step in for Liz Tracy (who defeated Robertson at SUG 22) to face Raquel Canuto. The winner of this match will face SUG champion Amanda Loewen.
Carlos Condit vs. Jake Ellenberger: Condit and Ellenberger will meet in a rematch of their 2009 MMA bout that saw Condit winning by split decision. Ellenberger is a powerful wrestler with a 1-2 SUG record. Condit is new to submission grappling competition, but was known for his aggressive guard in MMA.
Dan Stoner vs. Richie Martinez: Longtime 10th Planet standout Richie Martinez will look to bounce back after losing to Mason Fowler at SUG 21. He’ll take on Dan Stoner, a seven-time SUG veteran riding a two-match win streak.
Andy Varela vs. Joey McKay: Andy Varela had a strong showing against Mason Fowler at SUG 22, but came up short in overtime. He’ll face two-time SUG veteran Joey McKay.
Team SAC (champion) vs. Team Toro: In tag team jiu-jitsu action, new champions Chris “Sunshine” Lencioni and Owen Papworth will take on challengers Team Toro, consisting of UFC veteran Anthony Birchak and Deon Clash.
How to watch: SUG 23 takes place on Sunday, May 23 and will live and exclusively on UFC Fightpass.
