Mexican superstar Saúl ‘Canelo’ Alvarez has no interest in competing in the Olympic Games in Tokyo, which have been postponed until 2021.
In the last two Olympics, there was a rule change that allowed professional boxers to compete in the Olympic tournaments.
While some high profile fighters, like Manny Pacquiao and Wladimir Klitschko, loosely entertained the possibility, neither man took any steps to enter the qualification system.
In the last few months in Mexico, there was a growing legion of fans and officials who wanted to see Canelo enter the tournament and bring back a gold medal for his country.
But Canelo would never explore that possibility because he refuses to take away a potential spot from a young fighter with aspirations of winning a gold medal.
“If I had wanted to participate in an Olympic Games I would not have become a professional, become a world champion and reached the very top. Thank God I have achieved it. There are others who have that dream of going to Tokyo 2021 and taking that away from young people.. it would not be fair of me to do that,” explained Canelo in a video call to Fox Sports.
