International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach says that if the rescheduled Olympic Games can’t take place next year they probably will be canceled for good.
The local organizing committee is stating that at this point there is no “Plan B” if the coronavirus pandemic is still part of the world’s agenda.
“You cannot forever employ 3,000 to 5,000 people in an organizing committee,” Bach told BBC Sport. “You cannot have the athletes being in uncertainty.”
“You cannot every year change the entire sports schedule worldwide of all the major federations. You cannot have the athletes being in uncertainty. You cannot have so much overlapped with a future Olympic Games, so I have some understanding of this approach by our Japanese partners.”
When asked how confident he was that the Games would go ahead, Bach said:
“We have to be prepared for different scenarios. There is a clear commitment to having these games in July next year.
“There is no blueprint for it so we have to reinvent the wheel day by day. It’s very challenging and at the same time fascinating.”
