Reports: Greco-Roman wrestling could be excluded from Paris 2024

Bad news incoming for all Greco-Roman wrestlers, as WrestlingUA reports that there’s a chance the discipline may be excluded from the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, France.

According to the Russian outlet WrestlingUA, the President of Wrestling Federation of Azerbaijan Namik Aliyev who is also a bureau member of United World Wrestling (UWW) says that it is possible that ‘Greco-Roman wrestling will no longer be in the Olympic Games program’. Reportedly, the step is being taken to promote beach wrestling.

The media also noted that the Greco-Roman discipline has already been removed from the Youth Olympic Games which will be held in Dakar, Senegal in 2022. Instead, they have included beach wrestling in the tournament.

“Apparently, the Greco-Roman style will come out of the program of the Olympics-2024. We have been declaring our athletes to compete in beach wrestling for several years. Last year we won two medals at the World Games. Oyan Nazariani became the world champion. From now on, we will strengthen this type of martial art,” Namik told Dagestan Wrestling.
