UFC light heavyweight Anthony Smith (32-14) got back on the winning road this last Saturday when he submitted home town hero Alexander Gustafsson (18-6) in the main event of UFC Stockholm even with the broken hand Smith sustained in the opening round.
“Lionheart” was ranked #4 in the division before the bout, but now the American will be moving up in the rankings. It was a bounce-back performance for Smith who lost his previous fight in March against the champion Jon Jones.
“I think it’s absolutely the biggest win of my career, probably the one I’m most proud of, just because of what happened in my last fight,” Smith said at the post-fight press conference.
“Typically, guys that come off of title losses don’t bounce back like that. I can just sit at the top and let those guys fight it out. I’m going to hang out up here for a while and we’ll see what it looks like later on”, Smith said.
After his vacation is over, the 30-years-old fighter will be in the hunt for another title shot.
“I’ll tell you the same thing I’ve told Jon – I’ll see you again. And that’s what I’m working toward. I’m working toward the fight with Jon. I want to get back to the title shot, and that’s the goal. So whatever that looks like when I come back, I’ll figure out this hand injury and go from there. I wouldn’t still be here if I wasn’t chasing Jon Jones.”
