Open workouts in today combat sports are entirely for the fans. You won’t meet a fighter that will be going there showcasing his true skills and techniques. Some are taking the stage with an attitude, others are just having fun and breaking a little sweat.
How is Nate Diaz approaching his open workout? In a typical Nate Diaz Style. The 34-year-old Californian is making his return to the Octagon this Saturday against Anthony Pettis and you’d think he’s a little nervous. Well, that’s not the case. The Stockton native kicked off his session in probably the most historic and unseen way – by lighting up a joint.
But don’t you worry. Diaz did clarify that he was smoking CBD (Cannabidiol) which is a non-psychoactive cannabis component known for its medical uses. His supply was courtesy of Game Up CBD, a company he launched with his brother Nick. CBD is not banned by the UFC anti-doping rules, unlike THC (tetrahydrocannabinol is the chemical responsible for most of marijuana’s psychological effects.)
Last year cannabidiol was taken out of the WADA banned substance list, therefore USADA is ok with it.
“I gotta smoke the weed after the fight,” he told media members during the post-workout scrum. “So I had to smoke Game Up CBD.”
“CBD by Game Up Nutrition. It’s good for you.”
