The California State Athletic Commission has approved new safety regulations for the coronavirus, paving the way for both boxing and MMA to resume action under their jurisdiction.
Part of these new safety measures will include a quarantine bubble that will be demanded for all events, in which all participants — including fighters, team members, referees, and judges — will have to remain. Fans will also not be allowed to attend in person. So, pretty much what we’ve seen from Top Rank’s summer series which they’ve aired on ESPN from Las Vegas.
With the state now in play for fight cards, Golden Boy will hold a fight card on Friday night in Indio, where highly-touted welterweight prospect Vergil Ortiz (15-0, 15 KOs) will face Samuel Vargas (31-5-2, 14 KOs) in the feature bout. Ortiz, 22, has won every single one of his fights by stoppage thus far, and will look to keep that streak going against Vargas, 31, who was last stopped by Danny Garcia in 2016.
