Former UFC bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt has made a surprising announcement that he plans to move down to the flyweight division as soon as he fights with Raphael Assuncao.
Currently, the flyweight championship is vacated and there’s no champion. The American hasn’t fought since March 2019 when he lost for a third consecutive time in his pro career.
The 28-year-old was supposed to fight Assuncao last week, but the fight got canceled due to injury and then the coronavirus outbreak happened.
Cody (@Cody_Nolove) also dropped this little number on champ Henry Cejudo (@HenryCejudo), explaining why he might not drop to 125 right away 😆😆 pic.twitter.com/v1FkgLaqGh

Garbrandt himself stated that his fight with the Brazilian will be his last one in the bantamweight division and that sparked an immediate reaction from the former flyweight king Henry Cejudo.
I own that weight class too! No where to hide @Cody_Nolove #bendtheknee https://t.co/QDaiNCzxgQ

The last time the flyweight belt was on the line was back in February when Joseph Benavidez fought Deiveson Figueiredo. Joseph was the only one that could win the title because Figueiredo came in over the limit and he was declared ineligible to become champion even if he wins, as it happens.
