The heavyweight rematch between reigning champion Daniel Cormier and former champion Stipe Miocic is officially set for UFC 241 on Aug. 17.
UFC officials confirmed an initial report from ESPN during the broadcast of UFC Ottawa on Saturday night.
Cormier (22-1, 1 NC), also a former UFC light heavyweight champion, previously dethroned Miocic with a violent first-round knockout at UFC 226 last July. While Miocic campaigned for an immediate rematch, Cormier instead defended his heavyweight crown against Derrick Lewis at UFC 230 in November, where fans saw him walk away with the second round submission. While Miocic continued to wait for his second shot at the champion, Cormier chose to sit out in hopes of securing a fight against Brock Lesnar while also recovering a hand injury.
But with Lesnar officially announcing his retirement from mixed martial arts, the UFC decided it was finally time to rebook Cormier and Miocic.
Prior to dropping his championship, fans saw Miocic (18-3) successfully defended his title against Alistair Overeem, Junior dos Santos and Francis Ngannou. His three consecutive title defenses remains the most in UFC heavyweight history.
UFC 241 is set to go down at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif. No other bouts have been confirmed for the card.
