Devin Haney says he’s not overlooking Yuriorkis Gamboa

With lightweight Devin Haney (24-0, 15 KOs) still looking towards a fight against Yuriorkis Gamboa (30-3, 18 KOs) in November, Haney tells RingTV he isn’t making much of all the talk of Gamboa being a washed-up fighter coming off a serious injury. Gamboa, of course, is coming off an Achilles tear in his last outing and at an advanced age for a prize fighter.

“People shouldn’t look past Gamboa. I’m not. I’m healed and 100-percent and I feel great. Seeing how strong I am, I feel like haven’t lost anything.

“Gamboa is a tough guy, and lot of people don’t understand that. He took Tank Davis 12 rounds and the guy was in that fight for 12 rounds (in Dec. 2019), before he tore his Achilles.”

Haney continued by calling Gamboa a ‘dangerous’ opponent but the general sentiment from fans has been quite underwhelming about the matchup overall. Gamboa, 38, has been out of action since that Achilles tear back in December 2019, and Haney, 21, is most recently coming off a unanimous decision win over Alfredo Santiago last November before undergoing shoulder surgery.
