An interesting heavyweight match up is currently in the works. Croatia’s Filip Hrgovic may be facing fellow stableman Zhilei Zhang in the first quarter of 2022.
According to Hrgovic’s promoter Nisse Sauerland if such a fight comes to life, it should be an IBF title eliminator.
Unfortunately, there’s already a scheduled IBF eliminator between Luis Ortiz and Charles Martin that will take place in January.
Even if the International Boxing Federation decides that there will be no secondary eliminator, a fight between Hrgovic and Zhang will be an upgrade for both fighters, given the fact their recent opposition has been nowhere near Top 20.
“We are ready for ‘Big Bang’ Zhang, and he will meet a pent-up, angry Croatian warrior. If Zhang is ready and willing? We will do that. People are ducking Hrgovic and won’t fight him,” said Sauerland of Hrgovic.
Last Saturday, Hrgovic stopped Emir Ahmatovic in the third round on the undercard of Devin Haney vs. Joseph ‘Jojo’ Diaz Jr. card at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Hrgovic dropped Ahmatovic on three separate occasions before the contest was halted.
Seven-year professional Zhang is coming off a second round knockout win over Craig Lewis on November 27th at Madison Square Garden in New York on the undercard of the Teofimo Lopez vs. George Kambosos card on DAZN.
