How to perform Eui-Am in ITF Taekwondo (VIDEO)

Eui-Am is the thirteenth pattern taught to ITF Taekwondo students (after Ge-Baek).

It is one of the 2nd-degree black belt patterns used in ITF-style taekwondo. Eui Am is the pseudonym of Son Byong-Hi, a leader of the Korean independence movement in 1919 C.E.

There are 45 movements in this ITF pattern, referring to his age when in 1905 he changed the name of the Confucian religion Dong Hak to Chondo Kyo (Heavenly Way).

  • 1. Step the right foot toward C into a Left Walking Stance facing D. Low Inward knife-hand Block to D.
  • 2. Step the left foot toward C into a Right Walking Stance facing D. Left High Outer Forearm Side Block to D.
  • 3. Execute a Right Middle Punch to D, while maintaining a Right Walking Stance facing D.
  • 4. Execute a Left Low Twisting Kick to D, keeping the position of the hands as they were in 3.
  • Perform 5 and 6 in a continuous motion:
  • 5. Lower the left foot to D into a Left Walking Stance facing D. X-Fist Downward Block.
  • 6. Execute a Right Knifehand Rising Block, maintaining a Left Walking Stance facing D.
  • 7. Jump to D, forming a Right X-Stance (cross stance) facing BD. Right High Backfist Side Strike to D, bringing the left fingers to the right side fist.
  • 8. Step the left foot toward C into a Right L-Stance (i.e., left foot forward) facing C. Left Middle Punch to C.
  • 9. Execute a Right Middle Reverse Turning Kick to AC.
  • 10. Lower the right foot to C in a stomping motion to form a Sitting Stance facing A. Right Middle Knifehand Side Strike to C.
  • 11. Execute a Left Middle Side Piercing Kick to C, while turning clockwise, pulling both hands in toward the body.
  • 12. Lower the left foot to C into a Left Walking Stance facing C. Right High Crescent Punch.
  • 13. Execute a Left Middle Turning Punch, pulling the right foot into a Parallel Stance facing C. Perform slowly.
  • 14. Step the left foot toward D into a Right Walking Stance facing C. Left Low Knifehand Inward Block.
  • 15. Step the right foot toward D into a Left Walking Stance facing C, at the same time executing a Right High Outer Forearm Side Block to C.
  • 16. Execute a Left Middle Punch to C, while maintaining a Left Walking Stance facing C.
  • 17. Execute a Right Low Twisting Kick to C, keeping the position of the hands as they were in 16.
  • Perform 18 and 19 in a continuous motion:
  • 18. Lower the right foot to C into a Right Walking Stance facing C. X-Fist Downward Block.
  • 19. Execute a Left Knifehand Rising Block, while maintaining a Right Walking Stance facing C.
  • 20. Jump to C into a Left X-Stance (cross stance) facing BC. Left High Backfist Side Strike to C, bringing the right fingers to the left side fist.
  • 21. Step the right foot toward D, forming a Left L-Stance (i.e., right foot forward) facing D. Right Middle Punch to D.
  • 22. Execute a Left Middle Reverse Turning Kick to AD.
  • 23. Lower the left foot to D in a stomping motion to form a Sitting Stance facing A. Left Middle Knifehand Side Strike to D.
  • 24. Execute a Left Middle Side Piercing Kick to D, while turning counter-clockwise, pulling both hands in toward the body.
  • 25. Lower the right foot to D into a Right Walking Stance facing D. Left High Crescent Punch.
  • 26. Execute a Right Middle Turning Punch, pulling the right foot into a Parallel Stance facing D. Perform slowly.
  • 27. Step the right foot toward D into a Right Walking Stance facing D. Middle Knifehand Wedging Block.
  • 28. Execute a Left Ridgehand Circular Block to BD, while maintaining a Right Walking Stance facing D.
  • 29. Execute a Downward Twin Palm Block, pulling the right foot into a Left Rear Foot Stance facing D.
  • 30. Execute a Left Middle Punch to D, sliding the right foot into a Left L-Stance (i.e., right foot forward) facing D.
  • 31. Execute a Right Low Ridgehand Inward Block to D while shifting to C maintaining a Left L-Stance (i.e., right foot forward) facing D.
  • 32. Step the left foot toward D into a Left Walking Stance facing D. Middle Knifehand Wedging Block.
  • 33. Execute a Right Ridgehand Circular Block to AD, while maintaining a Left Walking Stance facing D.
  • 34. Execute a Downward Twin Palm Block, while, pulling the left foot into a Right Rear Foot Stance facing D.
  • 35. Execute a Right Middle Punch to D, while going into a Right L-Stance (i.e., left foot forward) facing D.
  • 36. Execute a Left Low Ridgehand Inward Block to D while shifting to C maintaining a Right L-Stance (i.e., left foot forward) facing D.
  • 37. Execute a Right High Reverse Turning Kick to BD.
  • 38. Lower the right foot to D into a Left Rear Foot Stance facing D. Middle Knifehand Guarding Block to D.
  • 39. Execute a Right High Reverse Turning Kick to AD.
  • 40. Lower the left foot to D into a Right Rear Foot Stance facing D. Middle Guarding Block to D.
  • 41. Step the left foot toward the side rear of the right foot, and then the right foot toward C into a Right L-Stance (i.e., left foot forward) facing D. Left Low Knifehand Outward Block to D.
  • 42. Execute a Right Middle Punch to D, sliding the left foot into a Left Walking Stance facing D.
  • 43. Step the left foot toward C into a Left L-Stance (i.e., right foot forward) facing D. Right Knifehand Low Block to D.
  • 44. Execute a Left Middle Punch to D, sliding the right foot into a Right Walking Stance facing D.
  • 45. Execute a Right High Punch to D, while maintaining a Right Walking Stance facing D.
  • End: Bring the foot back to the ready position.
