Today’s throwback brings us 12 years back in the time when the 17th World Grand Prix K-1 event took place in 2009.

8 of the finest heavyweight kickboxers are going to Yokohama, Japan, in order to participate in the biggest kickboxing event of the year. Until this very day, a lot of the fans believe that was the best WGP ever.

Ruslan Karaev, Semmy Schilt, Badr Hari, Alistair Overeem, Ewerton Teixeira, Jerome Le Banner, Errol Zimmerman, and last year’s winner Remy Bonjasky have made it to the quarter-finals.

The event takes place on December 5 in front of 18 000 fans at “Yokohama Arena”.

The semifinals include four of the most elite fighters the world has ever seen. The first 1/2 final opposes Badr Hari and Alistair Overeem. Both future Hall of Famers has never won the tournament prior to 2009. This is only their second and final bout.

As well as the initial fight which takes place a year earlier, this one is also over in the very first round, but this time with a different outcome.
