During some downtime on tonight’s Canelo-Smith broadcast, Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn announced that the long-awaited rematch between Juan Francisco Estrada and Roman “Chocolatito” is official for Mar. 13 on DAZN.
Estrada (41-3, 28 KO) and Gonzalez (50-2, 41 KO) first met back in 2012, when both were still at 108 pounds, with Gonzalez winning a decision in Los Angeles. Estrada has chased “Chocolatito” up through the weights looking for a second shot at the Nicaraguan star, and now will finally get it at 115 pounds, where Estrada holds the WBC title and Gonzalez has the WBA belt.
This is a great fight that all boxing fans should genuinely look forward to, mark this one down, circle it on the calendar, and be excited for it. Gonzalez, 33, has proven he’s far from done after back-to-back losses to Srisaket Sor Rungvisai in 2018, most recently winning the WBA belt from Kal Yafai in February and then beating Israel Gonzalez in a defense on Oct. 23. Estrada, 30, headlined that Oct. 23 card, winning a really spirited rematch against Carlos Cuadras.
