UFC lightweight king Khabib Nurmagomedov (27-0) slammed the interim champion in his division Dustin Poirier (25-5) by saying that his title means pretty much nothing. The 30-year-old American got the gold around his waist after he defeated Max Holloway at UFC 236 and now “The Diamond” will be facing Khabib in the fall of 2019.
But the 30-year-old Russian is clearly not impressed with Poirier’s title and said that he’s currently in negotiations for a lightweight title unification bout with the American Top Team product in September.
“Poirier won a temporary belt. Temporary,” Nurmagomedov said at M-1 Apeha, per BJPENN.com’s Drake Riggs.
“I have a real one. The only thing that attracts me in this battle is the new belt. It’s pretty. And the rival is a very good one, we cannot underestimate him, he defeated many top fighters. In the UFC they say that I will fight Poirer in a little more than five months. It is difficult to negotiate with me, I am with my principles. I hope the negotiations will go well and in September we will fight.”
Khabib hasn’t fought since last October when he destroyed Conor McGregor at UFC 229 in Las Vegas. “The Eagle” is still serving his 9-months NSAC ban for the melee that took place after his fight with the Irish.
