The third fight of Meca Vale Tudo 1 (May 27, 2000) was between Luiz “The Joker” Azeredo and Anderson “The Spider” Silva.
This fight was the only one in the show to go to a decision and would be one of Silva’s only three losses in the professional fight circuit for 12 years.
Though Azeredo didn’t have quite the same success he proved a tough competitor and moved on to bigger, higher-paying shows.
Two things stand out to me in this fight. First, the size of the ring matters, particularly when you’re Silva’s height and are much better with striking than on the mat. There was little chance of avoiding the clinch.

Though he absorbed some strikes, Silva essentially shut down Azeredo's ground game with an unorthodox foot grab from the bottom. Were you Azeredo, how would you have dealt with this rather unusual position in order to finish the match?#oldschooljiujitsu #oldschoolbjj #andersonsilva #luizazeredo #chuteboxe
