Tony Ferguson opens as favorite in hypothetical Justin Gaethje UFC 249 matchup

Only two men have defeated Justin Gaethje in his career thus far, but the oddsmakers have at least one more name who they’re picking to beat him.

Betting site BetOnline.ag has posted odds for a potential matchup between Gaethje and would-be lightweight title challenger Tony Ferguson should the two meet in the replacement main event of UFC 249. Gaethje is reportedly a candidate to replace UFC champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, who recently returned to Russia and whose travel options are limited given restrictions related to the coronavirus pandemic.

Nurmagomedov himself stated on Thursday that he is not expecting to compete at UFC 249. The April 18 event has been besieged by by COVID-19 concerns, first being forced out of its original location of Brooklyn and now seeing its highly-anticipated headliner fall through.

As of now, Ferguson is a -150 (2-to-3) favorite, while Gaethje is a slight underdog at +130 (13-to-10).

Gaethje is on a three-fight winning streak, having most recently defeated Donald Cerrone by first-round TKO in September of last year. He has been campaigning for a bout with former two-division champion Conor McGregor and was listed as an underdog when odds were released for that potential matchup last month.

A former interim lightweight champion, Ferguson has won 12 straight. His last loss was in May 2012.
