It’s all a barbershop talk, but who cares.
The one question in boxing that divides people as nothing else matters. We’re talking about the debate of all debates – Mike Tyson or Muhammad Ali?
The two most glamoured heavyweights in the history of boxing, true legends and icons that made a lot of people famous.
The truth of the matter is we’ll never know who’d win in a fantasy fight – Tyson’s power or Ali’s elusiveness. But now another heavyweight champion has spoken on the matter and we should probably have a listen.
Speaking on Instagram live, Anthony Joshua had this to say:
“Should we be really comparing two legends?”
He then began by saying:
“It’s quite interesting because in the era of Muhammad Ali’s heavyweight reign the heavyweights of Tyson’s era were ranked like cruiserweights of the Mike Tyson, Larry Holmes, George Foreman eras. Lennox Lewis then. They kept getting bigger. Hence why in the amateurs they then created a super heavyweight division.”
He went on to say:
“So Muhammad Ali went from I think lightweight and moved his way up but he wouldn’t have been a fully-fledged heavyweight. So, let’s say we bulked Muhammad Ali up and put size and strength to him. I truly believe Mike Tyson would have won. The reason being when you watch the Muhammad Ali fight with Joe Frazier you see certain (similarities) Tyson to Joe Frazier styles. You know, moving, moving. Hooks, hooks. He managed to put Muhammad Ali down in the fight. It was a very tough fight for Muhammad Ali.”
In the end, Joshua concluded the following:
“I just believe Mike Tyson was better schooled because the time evolved. More developed. More science. More information. So I think Mike Tyson would have won in my humble opinion.”
