Aoiyama improves to 9-1 at the Spring Grand Sumo Tournament

Bulgaria’s best rikishi Aoiyama continues with his outstanding performance at the 2020 Spring Grand Sumo Tournament in Osaka, Japan.

Yesterday the Bulgarian won his 9 consecutive bout, making him the leader in the temporary standings. Aoiyama defeated No. 16 Shimanoumi (5-5), who had no answer for the Bulgarian’s powerful shoves and was quickly driven over the straw.

No. 5 maegashira Onosho (6-4) delivered the upset of the day, defeating the favorite Hakuho. The yokozuna fell into a two-way tie for the lead Tuesday following his first defeat of the Spring Grand Sumo Tournament.
