Golovkin narrowly edges Derevyanchenko for IBF title

Genadiy Golovkin is the new IBF middleweight champion after defeating Sergiy Derevyanchenko in New York.

All though being a bookmaker’s favorite, “GGG” needed 12 rounds in “Maddison Square Garden” do win the vacant title. The fight was one of Golovkin’s hardest to date, with the judges giving him the win by unanimous decision. Their cards showed 114-113, 115-112 and 115-112 in his favor and the Kazakhstan boxer admitted he needs more fight to improve his game.

“I want to say thank you so much to my opponent. This was a great job. I respect his team. I told you, he’s a very tough guy. This is huge experience for me. Right now, I understand I need more. Focus is boxing. This was a tough fight. I need a little bit more. I need to still get stronger in my camp. Just more serious. I need to work hard. I need a little bit more focus”, Golovkin said.
