It’s official – Canelo vs. Callum Smith in December

Saul Alvarez’s free agency has kicked off with a great super-middleweight clash against Britain’s Callum Smith.

Just a few weeks after the Mexican superstar left Golden Boy Promotions and DAZN, Canelo Promotions, and Matchroom Boxing have announced that the highly anticipated fight will take place on December 19.

Smith, 30, will put on the line his WBA and Ring Magazine World Super-Middleweight titles.

Alvarez was last seen inside the ring last November when he KO’d Sergey Kovalev in the 11th round. Smith fought for the last time also in November of 2019 when he beat his fellow countryman John Ryder.

The venue of the fight is yet to be decided, with Texas being the favorite to land the clash.

“I’m very happy to return to the ring and continue to make history,” said Canelo. “I am motivated to continue to be the best, and I look forward to fighting Callum Smith, who is one of the best at 76.2 kg.”

“We are very happy to return to the ring and close out the year with one more victory to continue demonstrating that Canelo is the best boxer on this planet,” said Eddy Reynoso, Sport and Talent director at Canelo Promotions and Canelo’s trainer.

“I’ve been wanting a big fight since becoming World champion, so I’m so pleased that during these challenging times we can deliver to the fans a fight between the very best in the division,” said Smith. “I truly believe I beat him and will prove that this is my division.”
