Lawrence Okolie is the new WBO cruiserweight champion of the world. The Brit captured the vacant belt after his triumph over Poland’s Krzysztof Glowacki, knocking him out I the sixth round of their encounter.
The fight took place in London with the 28-year-old Okolie relying on his reach and height advantage. Glowacki seemed nervous and it looked like he was scared to get on the inside.
Okolie’s leading hand was doing him greatly as he was terrorizing his opponent with jabs from all angles. Glowacki, meanwhile, was not using his right hand as he’d have to in order to make an impact on Okolie. The 34-year-old boxer from Poland was too cautious and didn’t want to get in the exchanges.
The long hand of the new champion were landing all over the place and it was just a matter of time before the big shot came. And that happened in the sixth.
“The Sauce” threw a jab that Glowacki managed to avoid, but the Polish fighter got caught immediately after that with a brutal right hand that sent him to the canvas.
Glowacki managed to beat the count, but his head was still banging and the ref waved off the fight. Okolie’s tactics to throw his right hand rarely paid him off well in the end.
Lawrence is now the fifth British current world champion after Anthony Joshua, Tyson Fury, Josh Taylor and Billy Joe Saunders.
