Three-time World Championship medallist to undergo knee surgery

The three-time World Wrestling Championship medallist from Iran – Alireza Karimi, will have to undergo knee surgery after he tore his ACL.

The Iranian got injured last year during the 2019 World Wrestling Clubs Cup and he was supposed to miss the upcoming Olympic Games, but since Tokyo 2020 was rescheduled for next year due to the coronavirus outbreak there’s a big chance he might qualify for the tournament if he manages to recover in time.

The freestyler won a silver medal in the -92 kg category from Nur-Sultan in Kazakhstan last year. He’s also a three-time Asian Wrestling Championships gold medallist.

He won at consecutive editions from 2015 to 2019 and also has a gold medal from the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta in Indonesia in the 97kg.

He sparked controversy in 2017 when he purposely lost a match at the Under-23 World Championships to avoid a match against an Israeli opponent.
